Todd Burns quieted any hopes that Republic may have had of a comeback and
Shano Collins had 2 base hits and 4 RBI as the Stafford 213's won in dramatic
fashion over the Republic Thunderbolts by a score of 15 to 14 at Wrigley
Field '41.
Stafford had the game winning rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs on 2 hits.
Mel Ott led off and keyed the rally when he drew a walk. Boog Powell was
next and he doubled which scored a run. Two outs later Hy Myers came up and
he slapped a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning. Stafford bats
were hot in the 1st inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 4 hits and the 7th
inning with 5 runs. It was roller coaster of a game as the lead change hands
6 times.
Dave Smith(4-3) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 1 inning. Burns got the
save, his 2nd. Jim Duffalo(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief. He allowed 2
hits and no walks in 1 inning.
Kevin Kelsey was feeling mighty fine as he answered questions in his office
after the game, 'Now that was one fine ending! Did you see how the crowd just
sat there in silence after the winning run scored? Here we are celebrating
wildly, and the stadium is cloaked in virtual silence. Weird. but GREAT!'
