Ed Walsh took a no-hitter into the 6th inning at Fenway Park '71 as the
Monterey Bay Saltier Anchovy beat the Y Tu Mama Tambien by the count of 2 to
0.
Monterey Bay had the game winning rally in the top of the 9th inning with 2
runs using 2 hits. Alex Grammas got things going when he stroked a single.
Walsh was next and he ripped a base-knock. Billy Hamilton then laid down a
sacrifice bunt. King Kelly stepped in and he drew a walk to load the bases.
John Briggs got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Bill Dahlen
continued the rally and drew a walk scoring a run. Earl Torgeson stepped up
to the plate and he drew a walk scoring the final run of the inning.
Monterey Bay banged out 7 hits on the afternoon.
It was the 3rd shutout of the year for Walsh(16-14). The right-handWalsh lost
his chance for a no-hitter when Wally Gerber singled with one out in the 6th
inning. Eric Gagne(10-14) was hit with the loss in relief.
'We didn't have a whole lot of chances today,' Padre said. 'Walsh just was
too much for our guys.'
