Bruce Hurst came through with a solid 7 innings as the Asbury Park Artists
defeated the South Park Italians in 11 innings 4 to 3 at County Stadium
'61.
Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings. Asbury Park came
out the victor in the 11th inning. Hank Aaron reached on an error. Terry
Turner stepped into the batter's box and he laced a one-base hit. Johnny
Briggs then drew a walk to load the bases. Bobby Richardson struck out,
unable to help the rally. After another out, Kenny Lofton stepped in and he
drew a walk scoring the run. Asbury Park had 11 hits for the afternoon while
South Park had 6.
The winning pitcher was Willie Hernandez(11-5) who allowed 3 runs in 4
innings. Jack Taylor(17-9) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 4 runs and
11 hits in 10 innings.
